OVRMap minting is going Live!

OVRMap minting is going Live!

2024-09-16

Yes, you heard that right, we’re going live with OVRMap minting, and that’s not all… We’re adding Snippets to OVRMaps, it will be possible to embed OVRMaps you own on any external website!

Let’s start with a small refresher on the importance of OVRMaps

OVRMaps are digital twins of the physical world created by the OVER Community members. They enable both precise AR re-localization  – sub 5 CM precision both indoors and outdoors – and the remote exploration of the digital twin of the mapped area leveraging Gaussian Splats. OVRMaps are the portal to the Spatial Web, they contain the data that enable mixed reality devices (Smartglasses, Pass-through VR Headsets and Smartphones) to understand where they are in space, performing what is also called spatial computation. Owning an OVRMap NFT means owning a piece of the largest 3D map of relevant locations in the world that the OVER community is building. Think about Google Maps but in Web3 for 3D Maps.

Currently, no project in Web3 is capable of generating and leveraging 3D Maps, our largest competitor is Niantic, the largest Web2 Spatial Computing company. At the time of writing, Niantic declares to have 170k 3D Maps, the OVER Community already generated 50k 3D maps, with a monthly mappings growth rate of more than 30% we’re are on the path to becoming the largest 3D Maps database in the world in less than 12 months!

OVRMap Minting: how does it work

OVR Mapping is a permissionless activity, anybody can map any location in the world, once you create your OVRMap, it will go through a review process, if the generated asset meets our quality standards, it will get approved, and you’ll be able to mint it for free from the OVER Marketplace. If the OVRMap is not approved, you’ll still be able to mint it, yet the process will not be free, and you’ll have to pay a small fee of 1 $ in OVR to mint the OVRMap NFT. We introduced this fee to discourage the minting of low-quality OVRMaps. Once in the OVRMap minting interface, you’ll also be able to select a preview image from the frames you captured that will be used as the thumbnail of your OVRMap NFT.

OVRMap NFTs: technical details

The OVRMap NFTs encode all of the data used to generate the 3D Map and include:

  • The raw data used to generate the 3D Map: an encrypted file saved to IPFS containing all of the frames captured by the mapper and used to generate the 3D Map. The frames are censored – no persons and plates -, only the owner of the OVRMap NFT can decrypt the raw data with a unique password.
  • All of the metadata of the OVRMap is saved as an IPFS URI JSON that encodes the following items: Country; OVRLand NFT ID; OVRLand Sentence id; Coverage; Score; Created At; Full Address; GPS Mean Accuracy; GPS Median Accuracy; GPS Mean Position; Declared Hex ID; GPS Hex ID; Photo Hash; Photo Count; Photo Quality; Total Photo Size; Encrypted Photo Zip.

Finally, the NFT ID string is constructed as follows: UINT(“OVRLand NFT ID” + ”_” + MD5(”Censored Images Database”)). This creates a direct reference to the content of the OVRland NFT from the NFT ID itself. The OVRLand NFT links to the IPFS are immutable and the data availability is granted by internal and external pinning services, in the next future a network of OVR token incentivized IPFS nodes will further extend the data availability guarantees on the IPFS hosted data.

This configuration has been conceived to create the strongest possible guarantees on the ownership and availability of the data represented by the OVRMap NFT.

OVRMap Snippets

You’ll now be able to embed an explorable version of your OVRMaps on any external website. Just head to the My Mapping section on the Marketplace, choose one of your OVRMaps, click on the three points menu over the thumbnail of the OVRMap, select Embed, copy the snippet, and you’re all set! To ensure that only the owner of the OVRMap can embed the content, any transfer of the OVRMap NFT from one wallet to another will deactivate the former snippet. A new snippet will have to be generated by the new owner of the OVRMap NFT.
